The best way to enjoy the Cinque Terre is on foot!

Cinque Terre are five fishing villages in the province of La Spezia, nestled in the region of Liguria on the northern coast of Italy. The five towns, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, are connected by a scenic, and at points, treacherous 400 km hiking path.

Monterosso al Mare has the best beach in the Cinque Terre and is convenient for walking the trails between the 5 towns, walking north to Levanto, or visiting other nearby areas. Monterosso al Mare is the largest of the 5 towns in the Cinque Terre.

Vernazza is the only real port in the Cinque Terre (see above painting). The small fishing village Vernazza is probably the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre. The medieval castle, Belforte, was built in the mid-1500's, primarily to protect the village from pirates. The tiny port is surrounded by subtle colorful pastels and the charming piazza is lined with good restaurants and bars. The village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country.

Corniglia is located in the middle of the Cinque Terre. It is the only town without access from the sea. Corniglia hangs above a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, surrounded by a basin of vines. It is reminiscent of the farmland further away from the Ligurian coast.

Manarola is surrounded by vines and is situated along a stream. The wine of Manarola is very famous and the "Via dell’ Amore" starts here: an easy to walk, paved path a distance of two kilometers, connecting Manarola to Riomaggiore.

Riomaggiore is the most southern beach of the Cinque Terre. The town climbs up along the ridges overlooking the sea and it is characterized from the typical stone houses with colored facades and slate-roofs.

Villa Borghese Lake - Temple of Aesculapius

Imagine a lovely ride in a row-boat on a peaceful lake in the center of Rome. This serene lake in Villa Borghese has lush greenery, swans, small row boats seek out little hidden nooks around the lake and the center-piece Tempio di Esculapio.

Villa Borghese is an oasis of peaceful serenity in the center of Rome - it was one of our many favorite get-away on some summer weekends when we lived in Rome. As you stroll through the gardens, paths and, especially the lake - there is a sense of simplicity and calm.

About Villa Borghese:

Villa Borghese is Rome’s largest public park, it can be a pleasant refuge from the hectic Roman streets and offers a large number of touristic attractions, featuring a lake, temples, fountains, statues and several museums.

The artificial lake in the park has a temple dedicated to Aesculapius – the god of health.

The temple is built on the island and was designed by Antonio Asprucci with beautiful Ionic columns.

Cefalu' is located on the island of Sicily about an hour outside of its biggest city, Palermo. Upon walking into this town we, were awe-struck by the natural beauty and sheer vibrancy of the city.

Walking through the streets of this historic town is like taking a lesson in life and in history.

Cefalu' has so many beautiful sites to be seen. Must see is the Duomo (the cathedral), beautiful architecture. La Rocca to climb for the views.

Cefalu' has one of the best public beaches that we visited in all of Sicily. It’s clean sand and clear water makes it a popular beach, so be prepared for crowds.

Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland

Eilean Donan is recognized all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Some people say Eilean Donan is the most beautiful castle in Scotland.

The Castle is most definitely worth the visit, the place was post card perfect with the dramatic setting of an ancient castle sitting on a small island surrounded by color soaked mountains.

Windmills of Consuegra, Spain

Consuegra is located a short detour off the main highway to the south of Madrid. The windmills are very photogenic.

Made famous by Cervantes in Don Quixjote. These impressive windmills are where the mad Knight tried to fight the "giants".

Exploring the Historic Oceanside Pier

When visiting Oceanside a north San Diego County beach destination, don't forget to take time to stop, park, see and walk the Oceanside Pier, one of the greatest piers in all of California.

The 4th longest Pacific Ocean pier in California at approx. 1,942 feet in length, Oceanside Pier . You can be swept away with the beauty of the Oceanside Pier when you begin to stroll on it. It really becomes a journey of exploration.

We sat on a bench on the pier to admirer the sea and hear the sounds of the seagulls cry above us and the splashing of the waves below us making small sounds.

One of the best places to find great color palettes and combinations is in Nature!

We spotted this beautiful autumn color scene along the Arkansas River in Colorado.

Chalk Creek is the main creek that runs through the canyon. It starts at places higher up near Tincup Pass and the historic AlpineTunnel before eventually flowing into the Arkansas River in Nathrop.

Hana waterfalls in Maui, Hawaii

This is one of the most popular and gorgeous falls in Hawaii. The Hawaiian name for this waterfall is Helele’ike’oha Falls and is only a short hike from the road. The falls is the backdrop to a boulder strewn beach, just a few feet from the ocean. The falling water enters a deep, clear pool called “Blue Pool”. The boulders in the pool are slippery but the water is cool and refreshing. Native birds, wild pigs, and natural flora surround the area.

The Gates of the Valley

You can find this spot, also known as Valley View, along Northside Drive near the western end of the valley, as you approach the valley exits. There'll be a pullout on your left with a dozen or so parking spots.

That's El Capitan, the world's tallest granite monolith, on the left, and Bridalveil Falls on the right.

This is a must-see trail. Although the trail itself is pretty representative of mountain Northwest hiking, with lodgpole pines, mountain hemlock, creeks, and rivers, the real prize is the falls itself.

Our hike took us along along the path and at that point in time, we felt like we were part of a perfect picture.

There was the tranquil, shimmering body of water, beyond which was the gorgeous garden, filled with greenery such as the huge Jasmin plants and evergreen hedgerows.

I particular remember when we visited some friends in Sicily, the "venditori ambulenti", roving vendors.

The roving vendor would show up a few times a week announcing the produce on his loud speaker.

The back of the roving vendors truck overflows with floppy lettuces, cauliflower, ripe tomatoes, wild artichokes, and just-plucked oranges—their green-leafed stems still attached as proof of freshness.

He saves us a trip down 100 steps to the nearest market.

Japanese Gardens

Garden design has been an important Japanese art for many centuries. Traditional Japanese landscape gardens can be broadly categorized into three types, Tsukiyama Gardens (hill gardens), Karesansui Gardens (dry gardens) and Chaniwa Gardens (tea gardens).

The name Tsukiyama refers to the creation of artificial hills. Tsukiyama gardens vary in size and in the way they are viewed. Smaller gardens are usually enjoyed from a single viewpoint, such as the veranda of a temple while many larger gardens are best experienced by following a circular scrolling path.

Karesansui gardens reproduce natural landscapes in a more abstract way by using stones, gravel, sand and sometimes a few patches of moss for representing mountains, islands, boats, seas and rivers. Karesansui gardens are strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism and used for meditation.

Chaniwa gardens typically feature stepping stones that lead towards the tea house, stone lanterns and a stone basin (tsukubai), where guests purify themselves before participating in the ceremony.

Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto

Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955. Kinkakuji was built to echo the extravagant Kitayama culture that developed in the wealthy aristocratic circles of Kyoto during Yoshimitsu's times. Each floor represents a different style of architecture.

The gardens hold a few other spots of interest including Anmintaku Pond that is said to never dry up, and statues that people throw coins at for luck.

Ring-Billed Gull at Beach

The ring-billed gull you can watch run up and down the shoreline sifting the fresh, wet grains of sand for tiny morsels.

The ring-billed gull they eat insects, seeds, grain, fish and garbage. It is often called the "fast food gull" because it often hangs around fast food restaurants scavenging for food.

The Ring-billed Gull is a medium-sized gull measuring 16 inches in length with a 4 foot wingspan. Its head, neck, chest and belly are white while its wings and back are a silver-gray. As its name suggests, its beak is a bright yellow with a black ring near the tip.

It was really an exciting adventure taking the boat to Mbudya Island, near Kunduchi Beach in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania, with all our friends. This island was a secluded small island, with beautiful white-sand beach, fringed by reefs with abundant marine life.

Spending the day snorkeling in the open ocean, some of us sun-bathing, some swam, and others went up onto the beach to explore.

Water gardens, also known as aquatic gardens, backyard ponds and garden ponds, usually referring to a man-made feature, typically combine a pool with aquatic plants and often ornamental fish. Fixed items such as rocks, fountains, statuary, waterfalls and watercourses can be combined with the pool to add visual interest and integration with the local landscape and environment.

Typical water garden plants are divided into 3 main categories: submerged, marginal, and floating.

Submerged plants are those that live almost completely under the water, sometimes with leaves or flowers that grow to the surface such as with the water lily.

Marginal plants are those that live with their roots under the water but the rest of the plant above the surface.

Floating plants are those that are not anchored to the soil at all, but are free-floating on the surface.

Weeping Willow Tree

The willow is one of the fastest growing shade trees, growing up to 10 ft. a year. Even though Weeping Willows are often found near rivers, lakes and wetlands, they can grow just about anywhere, even demonstrating some tolerance to drought.

Willows belong mainly to the arctic and north temperate zones, and the Weeping Willow proper seems to be a native of extra-tropical Asia, from Japan and China to Armenia and the banks of the Euphrates, and of Egypt and North Africa; but pendulous varieties of other species are also known in cultivation.

I love trees because they have many different shades of green, and they also carry other colors, so many that it's almost impossible to count. When I paint a picture of a tree I use many shades of green, yellow, purple, blue, brown, orange, white and that also depends what is the season.
